Ministerial Committee to monitor effective distribution of essentials

An effective mechanism will be formulated to distribute essential commodities across the country during the period of travel restrictions.

Tourism Minister, Prasanna Ranatunga said the government has appointed a special Ministerial Committee to monitor and coordinate this mechanism to ensure that benefits of the programme reach the needy people across the country.

The Committee includes Ministers Prasanna Ranatunga, Rohitha Abeygunawardene, Johnston Fernando and the Secretary to the Prime Minister and has been appointed by the Presidential Task Force for Economic Revival and the Poverty Alleviation.

The Committee has entrusted the task of streamlining the distribution of essential commodities including vegetables, fruits, rice and fish especially in rural areas during the period when travel restrictions are imposed.

Minister Ranatunga further said a programme of distributing essential commodities to the people is already being implemented under the supervision of relevant Divisional Secretaries adhering to the strict health guidelines.

Selected suppliers of essential commodities and services in all the districts have been given permits to implement this programme.
