The UN Resident Coordinator Hanaa Singer extended her appreciation for the continuous resounding efforts initiated by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) through the Defence Ministry to cripple the illegal drug ring, which in turn reflects a positive impression on both Sri Lanka and to the entire region.
She conveyed these views during a cordial discussion held with the Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) at the Defence Headquarters Complex, Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte today (Sep 23).
Head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Alan Cole was also present at the meeting.
Gen. Gunaratne, illustrating the records of recent drug seizures, said almost a ton of illegal drugs was taken into custody by the Sri Lankan law enforcing agencies.
The Defence Secretary explained the achievements made by National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) under the new headship and also stated on the process introduced for onward rehabilitation of drug addicts without delay.
UN Resident Coordinator Singer in an appreciative gesture praised the role of GOSL during the pandemic situation of the country.
She also commended the rehabilitation efforts put forward by the NDDCB in Sri Lanka.
The meeting was held conforming to the healthcare and safety standards to prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
