Parliament of Sri Lanka conducts the Short Course on Parliamentary Functions and Procedures at Trincomalee Campus of Eastern University

The short course on Parliamentary Functions and Procedures introduced by the Communication Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka for the universities was recently started for the students of the Trincomalee Campus of the Eastern University.

Thus, students representing the Faculty of Applied Science, Faculty of Communication and Business Studies and Faculty of Siddha Medicine participated in this course held on 12th and 13th.

Dr. V Anavaradhan, the dean of the Faculty of Siddha Medicine, who welcomed the students at the start of the course, said that all university students should study this short course on Parliamentary Functions and Procedures and he thanked the Parliament of Sri Lanka for conducting such a course.

Director of Administration and Director of Communications (Acting) Mr. H.E Janakantha Silva, Librarian of Parliament Mr. Siyath Ahmed, Deputy Principal Officer Mr. S.A.M Shaheed conducted lectures as the resource persons, during the short course. This course includes subject areas such as Democracy and Parliamentary System, Legislative Process of Parliament, Evolution of Parliamentary System, Parliamentary Committee System, Parliament and Public, Code of Conduct for MPs, Standing Orders etc.  

The students who actively participated in the question-and-answer session held during the course, raised their questions related to the Parliament and the resource persons provided answers for them. The students pointed out that this short course on the parliamentary system led to expanding their knowledge.

Rector of Trincomalee Campus of Eastern University Prof (Mrs.) Chandravathany G Devadason, Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Business Studies T. Baskar, Dean of the Faculty of Siddha Medicine Dr. V. Anavaradhan and a several lecturers representing the academic staff were also present.

Representing the  Department of Communication of Parliament, Media Manager Mrs. Nimmie Hathiyaldeniya, Public Outreach Officers Mr. Yashri Mohamed, Mr. Duminda Wickramasinghe, Mrs. Ishara Wickramasinghe, Media Officers Mr.Nuwan Duminda and Mr.Dhananjaya Illagolla, Public Outreach Office Coordinator Mr. Piyasiri Amarasinghe and National Democratic Institute (NDI) Program Officer (Parliamentary Affairs) Mrs. Chamani Premathilake and  NDI Manager Operations Mr. Chris Abeysekera were also present on this occasion.

This short course, organized by the Department of Communication of Parliament of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Trincomalee Campus of the Eastern University, was funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and sponsored by National Democratic Institute (NDI).
