Certificates awarded to undergraduates of the University of Jaffna

The certificate awarding ceremony held recently (15) for undergraduateswho successfully completed the short course on Parliamentary Functionsand Procedures by the Parliament of Sri Lanka for the undergraduatesof the University of Jaffna was concluded in grandeur with the participation of the Secretary General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera as its Chief Guest.

This course was organized by the Public Outreach Division of the Communication Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka with the primary objective of providing a comprehensive understanding to the university students about the parliamentary system.

The resource persons for this course, which was initiated for the academic purpose of the students of the Department of Media Studies – Faculty of Arts, are headed by the senior officials of the Parliament Secretariat.

Addressing the students of the Jaffna University, the Secretary General of the Parliament emphasized that a special responsibility is assigned to the youth community in a democratic governance system, and the Parliament of Sri Lanka is already following an open system for a wider youth participation. By increasing the youth participation in the Committees, it has been possible to obtain views and aspirations of the youth community directly to the legislature, and the ongoing internship training programs for selected students from island wide universities is another unique step to expand the youth participation in the Parliament.

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna, Dr. S Raguram and lecturers, officials including the country director of the National Democratic Institute Mr. Asoka Obeysekera and officials of the Parliament were present at the event held.

During the program, a special meeting between the Secretary General of the Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera and the Vice-Chancellor of Jaffna University, Professor S. Srisatkunarajah was held where the parliamentary process was discussed as well as the short course on parliamentary Functions and procedures conducted by the parliament for the university students.
