UK based Cross Ethnic Community offers Rs 1.2 mn scholarships for Ranaviru Children

Ranaviru Seva Authority (RVSA) awarded educational scholarships worth Rs. 1.2 million for 10 students belonging to war hero families who had excelled with 9 ‘A’ passes at the last G.C.E Ordinary Level Exam, over a period of two years in order to facilitate their G.C.E Advanced Level education.

Defence Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne was the Chief Guest at the Scholarship Awarding Ceremony organized under a notion of the Ranaviru Seva Authority’s Chairperson Major General Nandana Senadeera (Retd) at the RVSA office at Kollupitiya in Colombo 3, today (Aug 23).

Accordingly, each student will be presented with a monthly educational incentive of Rs. 5,000.00 for a period of two years.

These scholarships are sponsored by the Cross Ethnic Community of the United Kingdom. This society comprised of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities living in the UK also intends to present 90 more scholarships soon.   

Addressing the gathering, Gen. Gunaratne remarked that “These scholarships are given to you as a gratitude to the sacrifices of your fathers and it is your responsibility to study well and serve your motherland”.

He also stressed them to be useful citizens and to work towards the development of the country.

While appreciating the noble services of the RVSA, he thanked the sponsors for their benevolence in assisting the children of veteran’s families.

This newly introduced scholarship programme, an initiative of the incumbent RVSA Chairperson has so far awarded Rs 8.2 million.   

RVSA Director Brig. Chandra Abeykoon and parents of the beneficiaries were also present at the occasion.
