Decisions taken at the Party Leaders’ Meeting

Your Excellency,

In relations to the decisions taken at the party leaders’ meeting held today.

Today, a party leaders’ meeting was held at the Speaker’s official residence under my leadership with the participation of majority of party leaders and party representatives. The representatives involved had a lengthy discussion about the current situation in the country.

As decided by the party representatives including Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, it was decided that I, as the speaker, should submit the following proposals to you.

  1. The President and the Prime Minister to resign from their offices as soon as possible.
  2. In accordance with democratic Parliamentary methods and constitutionally, the next step is to convene Parliament within seven days and make a decision by consensus to appoint an acting president.
  3. Establishing an interim government headed by a new Prime Minister according to a consensus of the all-party public representatives representing the current Parliament under that President.
  4. Thereafter, calling for an election within a certain period of time and giving the people the opportunity to elect a new parliament.

In addition, three alternative proposals were presented by the Hon. Prime Minister.

I The President resigns immediately and the Prime Minister becomes acting President.

  1. All the parties to then united and an interim government is formed under the leadership of a new Prime Minister. OR
  2. Both the President and the Prime Minister resign, appoint a representative from the Parliament as Acting President, then appoint a new Prime Minister by all-party consensus, form an interim government and give the opportunity to form a new government within a specified period.
