A Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Corner for Parliament launched…


The opening of the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Corner under the patronage of Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Speaker of Parliament, held today (08) in celebration of the International Women’s Day.

The new GESI Corner established in the Library of Parliament consists of many books and reading material on Women studies including the female representation in Parliament through out the Parliament history.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Speaker stated that gender equality and social inclusion has been a long felt need in our country and that Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus can take great initiative in leading the women of this country. The Hon. Speaker also thanked Mr. Reed J. Aeschliman, Misson Director, USAID Sri Lanka for his assistance and support.

Following the address by the Hon. Speaker, Hon. (Dr.)  Sudarshini Fernandopulle, State Minister and the Chairperson of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus gave the opening remarks. Ms. Kushani Rohanadeera, Deputy Secretary General and Chief of Staff of Parliament then highlighted the achievements and the progress of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus of the ninth Parliament.

Members of the Caucus, Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister and Leader of the House, Hon. Lakshman Kiriella, Chief Opposition Whip, Hon. Ministers and Members of Parliament, The Secretary General of Parliament Mr. Dhammika Dasanayakethe, Staff of the Secretary General, Misson Director, USAID Sri Lanka and representatives from the National Democratic Institute (NDI) were present at the launch held.
