Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Kurunegala District Parliamentarian J. C. Alawathuwala said that 60 per cent of families in Sri Lanka live under the poverty line having only one meal a day.

The Parliamentarian was addressing a media briefing on December 23 morning at the SJB Office in Millawa, Kurunegala.

MP Alawathuwala said that malnutrition has increased to 18 per cent and the whole country is at risk of starvation.

“A kilo of chicken is being sold at Rs. 750. The people live in hunger. The Government does not have a proper plan to control the financial market,” he said.

“The vegetable prices have increased by a large percentage due to the fertilizer issue. The farmers warned that they will refrain from cultivating crops,” he also said.

The MP noted that a majority of hotels and canteens in Kurunegala have been closed due to the shortage of gas.

“The Government has failed to resolve the burning issues of the public,” MP Alawathuwala said.
