Sri Lanka-Korea Business Council members hosted by Korean Ambassador

On 03rd December 2021, Korean Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Santhush Woonjin JEONG welcomed Sri Lanka-Korea Business Council members at his residence in Horton place for a lunch gathering. Members of the Council including President – Priyantha Mendis, Vice President – Shamil Mendis, the Immediate Past President – Mahen Kariyawasam and the Founder President – Prof. Lakshman R. Watawala attended the luncheon.

Highlighting the infinite potential, Korea and Sri Lanka has for boosting trade and investment, Ambassador Santhush stated, “As the Korean Ambassador, it is one of my priorities to increase opportunities for Korean and Sri Lankan businessmen to engage with each other more proactively. My Embassy will pave the way for both businessmen and promote more active partnerships in the business communities between Korea and Sri Lanka. On a hopeful note, the volume of exports from Sri Lanka to Korea has increased 10 percent from USD 100 million in 2019 to USD 110 million 2020. This increase is an exceptional case amid the world experiencing an economic depression due to covid-19 pandemic”.

He also commended the invaluable contribution of the Sri Lanka-Korea Business Council to promote commercial ties and strengthen economic cooperation between Korea and Lanka.

Addressing the luncheon, Priyantha Mendis, President of the Sri Lanka-Korea Business Council, thanked Ambassador Santhush for the immeasurable support extended by him and the Korean Embassy to facilitate bilateral trade and bolster commercial ties by encouraging joint ventures, promoting investments and supporting many webinars and meetings between Korea and Sri Lanka.

He further stated, “I must mention that the Korean Government has once again helped our youth find employment in Korea and arranged the first batch of new entries to depart to Korea soon. Your initiative has helped to uplift the living standards of our youth and earn foreign currency at present”.

Executive Committee Members of the Sri Lanka-Korea Business Council – K. Kunendran, Ms. Patali Karunathilake, Asitha Martis, K. D. L. Chamara, Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce – Ms. Dinithi Dias and First Secretary of the Korean Embassy – Ms. Miyeon LIM were also present at the luncheon.
