Number of COVID-19 cases has drastically reduced in Colombo city while there have been no deaths during the last four days, Chief Medical Officer of Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said yesterday, October 18.

Dr. Wijayamuni said that the average reported cases have reduced to five during the past few days in the city, while there have been no deaths during the last four days.

“We carry out 220 PCR tests and around 300 Rapid Antigen Tests in six centres daily. Only one to two percent of the PCR and Rapid Antigen tests become positive currently. Most of the cases that become positive are without any symptoms and are first line contacts,” he said.

Dr. Wijayamuni earlier warned that people in Colombo City were acting in an irresponsible manner and that the disease might raise its head once again if people ignore health guidelines.

There have been 25,823 COVID-19 cases in Colombo City since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020 while there have been 1,038 deaths.
