The Conference titled Let’s Defeat Capitalism and Build People’s Power for Socialism organized by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) for the International Labour Day was held online yesterday, May 1.

At the event, Anura Kumar Dissanayake, leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna said there are two serious issues that our economy has faced.

He said the first is the fact that the treasury does not have enough funds to meet the expenses of the Government and that a sum of 2 billion US dollars must be paid back.

He also said the Government opted to take more loans to pay off these loans.

He added, during the past 1 and a half months alone, the Government has secured loans of 2 billion US Dollars from China.

The leader of the JVP said plans are drafted to sell off the West Container Terminal of the Colombo Port to India not as part of our strategic plan, but it is a scenario where we have to sacrifice the west container terminal in the hope of getting a loan from India.

Concluding, Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that this land is rich in gems, minerals, phosphate, limestone and other mineral resources, and Sri Lanka owns a sea area of 8 times our landmass.

He said the country should be transformed through the use of the most advanced technologies and management techniques in the world.
