580 people died in road accidents since January

The Sri Lanka Police say 580 people have been killed in road accidents in various parts of the country since January 01.

Five persons were killed in road accidents in various parts of the country Saturday (10) alone, said Police Media Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana.

The highest number of road accidents occurs in April and most accidents happen between April 10 and 20 Police Media Spokesman said.

Therefore, DIG Rohana requested the motorists to drive in accordance with the traffic rules and not to drive while intoxicated. He also urged the pedestrians pay attention when they walk

A special operation has been launched by all police stations in the country from Saturday (10) to arrest not only drunk drivers but also motorists using various drugs.

The Police Media Spokesman further stated that plainclothes police officers have been deployed on public transport to arrest drivers violating traffic rules.
