KOICA Sri Lanka Office conducts a High-Level Invitational Program in Korea inviting Hon. Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapakshe, Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms and 10 officers from the Ministry of Justice, Government Analyst’s Department (GAD) and other relevant departments from 22nd May to 29th May 2023. The project “Strengthen Capacity Building of Forensic Drug Analysis in the Criminal Justice System in Sri Lanka” aims to enhance the capabilities of the Department of Government Analyst in the analysis of Narcotic Drugs in order to timely provide reliable evidence-based reports for law enforcement authorities in Sri Lanka.
The participation of High-level officials is from the Ministry of Justice, Government Analyst’s Department, Department of Attorney General, Department of Legal Draftsmen, Department of Police – Narcotics Division, Ministry of Health – Chief Judicial Medical Officer and Criminal Records Division.
The objective of this program is to introduce Forensic Science System of Korea and enhance management capacity of policy makers. The program is facilitated by the National Forensic Service (NFS), a leading analytical research institute in scientific investigations in Korea.
Moreover this program provides a reference of forensic science system including Korea‘s experiences to Sri Lanka’s forensic science system, introduce advanced and latest analysis techniques of NFS of Korea to strengthen reliability of forensic science system of Sri Lanka and reinforce current partnership between Sri Lanka and Korea.
As a part of this program, Hon. Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapakshe, Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms met Mr. Han, Chang-seob, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Interior and Safety in Korea to share cutting-edge technologies in forensic science and discussed new ways of future cooperation to increase the reliability of criminal investigations.
KOICA supports the Forensic Science Sector in Sri Lanka since its establishment and provided technical assistance to upgrade the facilities of the DNA laboratory in the GAD and establish a digital training center at the Criminal Investigation Department through ‘Modernization of Forensic Science in Sri Lanka’ project (2013-2017).
