The Republic of Korea initiated the Remodeling of Workshops for Construction Courses at 4 Technical Colleges and Colleges of Technology

The Korea International Cooperation Agency, (KOICA) initiated the remodelling and rehabilitation of workshops for Construction Courses at 4 selected Technical Colleges and Colleges of Technology in Sri Lanka. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 2nd June 2022 at Department of Technical Education and Training.

The Country Director of the KOICA Sri Lanka Office, Ms. Kim Myung Jin, and the Director General of the Department of Technical Education and Training, Mr. S.C. Jagath were in attendance at the Signing Ceremony.

The Rehabilitation of Workshops is the 5th Component under the scope of the Capacity Building Project for Construction Courses at Technical Colleges and Colleges of Technology, a grant worth 4 Million USD. The RoD of the Project was signed on 3rd December 2021 at the Ministry of Education.

Following the provisions in the RoD, a needs assessment was successfully conducted to plan the Rehabilitation of CAD (Computer-aided Drawing) Room, Drawing Room and Plumbing Workshop at Colleges of Technology in Maradana, Ratnapura and Technical Colleges in Matara, Ratmalana. A team of Project Management Consultants from BuCheon University, South Korea dispatched during the month of March 2022 to perform the assessment.

The Memorandum of Understanding is signed between the Department of Technical Education and Training and Korea International Cooperation Agency is to manage and implement the activities related to the Workshop Rehabilitation in the beneficiary TVET institutions. Moreover, the signatories will ensure the proper and effective operation and maintenance of the buildings and equipment, rehabilitated and installed by the Korean Government for the Project and ensure their exclusive use for the Project.

At the small ceremony held at the Department of Technical Education and Training to sign the Memorandum of Understanding for the Rehabilitation of Workshops, the Country Director KOICA stated; “This Project aims to enhance the advanced quality of Technical and Vocational Education to meet the labor market demands in Construction Sector. And it is more meaningful to utilize Sri Lankan Procurement System to enhance the ownership of Sri Lankan Government.”

The Director General, Department of Technical Education and Training in his short address added “The implementing of Project will enable our beneficiary Colleges to create an attractive training environment with modern technology and teaching methodologies. With the prevailing economic crisis in Sri Lanka, this Grant Investment is a very valuable opportunity to TVET Sector and to Sri Lanka. Through the Expert Assistance from Korean Government, DTET will attend with responsibilities to have the maximum benefit out of the project.”
