A multi-modal public transport hub connecting Katunayake Airport is to be established along with an extensive railway line connecting Veyangoda and Orugodawatta railway stations to the Katunayake Airport.
Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that cabinet approval is intended to be obtained for a feasibility study for this project.
“China Harbour Corporation has agreed to carry out a feasibility study at their own expense,” he said.
“The feasibility study is scheduled to be carried in relation to the construction of a Multi Modal Public Transport Center at Katunayake integrating air, rail and bus transport, connecting the entire railway system to the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), construction of an international exhibition and conference center and renovation of the Colombo Fort Railway Station and railway line,” the Minister further said.
According to a study conducted by the Airport and Aviation, the number of passengers using the Katunayake Airport by 2030 is estimated to be 21.5 million.
“The airport is currently being expanded accordingly and simultaneously. It is essential to develop the facilities required for more efficient transportation of air passengers. Therefore this proposal is being submitted,” the Minister also said.
