On 2nd February 2022, Korean Ambassador Santhush Woonjin JEONG welcomed and greeted the 2022 Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) recipients selected from Sri Lanka, at the Korean Embassy.
Among many applicants, Ms. Sashini Imasha Yapa and Deneth Randila Rajapaksha were selected as 2022 Global Korea Scholarship winners after a scrutinised evaluation based on their academic performance, language ability, social contribution and extra-curricular activities.
Through the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), offered by Korea’s National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED), students worldwide including in Sri Lanka can study in Korea for free. Every year, more than 10 Sri Lankan students receive this scholarship from Korea, to pursue undergraduate and graduate programmes in Korea.
Korean Ambassador Santhush conveyed best wishes to the GKS scholarship recipients and stated, “My congratulations on winning the GKS scholarship, Subapethum! You are very important to bridge our two countries’ friendship and I hope you promote favourable interests in Korea and raise awareness among Sri Lankan youth after you return to Sri Lanka. I am very happy to note that the previous GKS alumni has achieved immense professional success and delivered fruitful results in recent years. Their continuous love and appreciation to Korea reflect their enjoyable educational experience through the GKS programme”.
“It is now your time to reap the benefits of this valuable chance. Learning the Korean language is a vital tool which will provide access to many academic and employment opportunities available in Korea for Sri Lankan youth. The introduction of Korean as a foreign language to advanced level classes last year will surely amplify such opportunities given to Sri Lankans. The future of Korea- Sri Lanka relations depends on the young generation and as the Korean Ambassador, I will do my best to expand our bilateral relations on various fields which will open new horizons for you. I hope you take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, work hard to gain knowledge and become valuable assets to contribute to your country. At the same time, I hope you contribute to forge stronger relations and cooperation between Korea and Sri Lanka,” he also stated.
Education cooperation has played a key role in deepening the strong Korea-Sri Lanka bilateral relationship. GKS is designed to provide students with opportunities to study at higher educational institutions in Korea at undergraduate and graduate-level degrees, which will enhance international education exchange and deepen mutual friendship between Korea and Sri Lanka.
