The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday, July 15, urged the Government to make a responsible statement on its policy and action plan on the foreign exchange crisis that the country is facing today without leaving the country, its resources and national security in danger.
Former JVP MP, Sunil Hadunnetti told a news conference that citizens of this country, business community and industrialists have a right to know that.
He said the Government was planning to sell important state resources for dollars and added that these temporary solutions would not resolve this crisis.
“The country was facing an acute foreign exchange crisis, which has a negative impact on essential imports and repaying loans. This Government came to power claiming that they knew how to find foreign exchange. State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal says there is no crisis as such,” he said.
Mr. Hadunnetti said buying fuel and operating the power plants are in danger due to this foreign exchange crisis and pointed out that plans are afoot to hand over these services to foreign Companies.
“The Government should clearly explain its policy and action plan to solve this crisis. The Government has already taken steps to restrict imports. But, it has not been able to find a solution to this crisis. The new Finance Minister should explain how he is going to resolve this crisis within next few months. He has met US Ambassador to Sri Lanka and several other envoys. The Government has a responsibility to disclose as to what actions need to be taken to arrest this scenario,” he also said.
He said plans are afoot to sell important state resources such as Trincomalee Oil Farm, power generation, fuel supply and added that it is also planning to sell valuable lands and properties in Colombo through the Selendiva Investments (Pvt) Ltd.
