Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Maha Vihara Chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya, Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathna Thera stated that it is most appropriate to adhere with all Government health regulations when celebrating the Vesak festival.
The Maha Nayake Thera, issuing a Vesak Day message, observed that Buddhist teachings should be given priority by devotees when celebrating the Vesak festival.
“As Buddhists, we can be proud of the fact that this day has been declared a special day by the United Nations. On Vesak Full Moon Day, it is customary for Buddhists around the world to engage in almsgiving, virtuous deeds, meditation and do offerings to commemorate the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of the Buddha,” the Maha Nayake Thera said.
“Sri Lankan Buddhists are accustomed to worshiping shrines and giving a special place to Vesak decorations, including lanterns, electric and Vesak Pandals. However, today the people of the whole world are facing a time of great instability. Therefore, everyone should be aware of the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 virus and follow all health recommendations. It is important to understand that the human race has been living in such a terrifying environment for more than a year now. As Buddhists our lifestyle should be one of a healthy environment while respecting Nature and protecting natural resources,” the Maha Nayake Thera observed.
