The railway trade unions have decided to call off their sudden strike action launched yesterday, April 9, following discussions with the relevant authorities.

The Railway Locomotive Drivers’ Association and Railway Controllers’ Association launched a sudden strike on Friday based on several demands.

Accordingly, the Railway Department has decided to suspend all train services scheduled to depart from the Colombo Fort Railway Station.

The Secretary of the Railway Engine Drivers’ Association, Indika Dodangoda stated that the reason for the strike was the appointment of a new General Manager for the Railway Department.

Earlier, Mr. Dodangoda said their trade union action will continue until their demands are met.

In addition the trade union action was taken on the basis of several demands including the provision of facilities for construction of new carriages, carrying out repairs by the Railway Department and the suspension of importation of defective carriages from India.
