Report to increase efficiency of Jayawardhanapura Hospital

The report of the committee appointed to obtain recommendations to increase the efficiency of the Jayawardhanapura Hospital was handed over to Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi.

The report containing the recommendations of the committee appointed to look into the current functioning of the Jayawardhanapura Hospital and obtain recommendations to increase its efficiency was handed over to Health Minister, Pavithra Wanniarachchi yesterday, January 22.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had earlier instructed Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi to take action to increase efficiency of the Sri Jayawardhanapura Hospital. Accordingly a five-member committee chaired by former Secretary to the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, Seetha Vithanachchi was appointed to make recommendations to do so.

The other members of the committee were former Health Ministry Secretary, Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage; Lanka Private Hospital Chairman, Dr.Bandula Wijesiriwardena; former Attorney General, Palitha Fernando; Health Ministry Chief Financial Officer, S. Swarnathilaka.

The committee identified hospital issues, background information, current status of the hospital, processes and issues pursued by the hospital board of directors, issues related to the Hospital Board Act, issues related to administration and management, issues identified in financial management, promotion and service related issues.

The Report of the Committee containing 36 recommendations including short term and long term measures, proposals including issues identified by the audit was presented to the Health Minister.

The Health Minister said this task was a main task assigned to her by the President and that she had previously visited the Jayawardhanapura Hospital and supervised the activities of the hospital. The Minister further said that a team with extensive experience in health, administration, finance and law has been appointed and further action will be taken after studying the recommendations of the committee.

Health Ministry Secretary, Major General Sanjeewa Munasinghe; Director General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena; and Ministry Additional Secretary, Dr. Sunil de Alwis were present.
