The State Minister of Ports Development, Kanaka Herath made a special inspection visit at the Port of Galle recently with the objective of seeking possibilities to make the Port of Galle a tourist port.
At the visit he said that the government was working on the guidance of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to rebuild the Sri Lankan economy, which had collapsed in recent times and accordingly, steps would be taken to develop the Port of Galle under instructions by the Minister of Ports and Consumer Affairs, Johnston Fernando.
The State Minister further stated that no considerable development activities had been carried out at the Port of Galle since 2005 and sooner, a Yacht Marina Zone will be established in the Port of Galle to promote tourism.
He also stated that steps would be taken to commence the breakwater development of the Port of Galle and to dock all passenger vessels to Galle at the outer port area to further strengthen facilities for tourism promotional activities at the port.
During the inspection tour, the State Minister also inspected the welfare facilities of the employees of the Port of Galle. Cabinet Minister, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana; Secretary to the State Minister of Ports Development, N. P. V. C. Piyathilake; Resident Manager of the Port of Galle, K. A. K. N. W. Weerasinghe; President of the Progressive Workers’ Union Commercial and Industrial Services – Ports, Sanjaya Kumara Weligama; and several other port trade union representatives also joined the occasion.
