Sri Lanka government plans to purchase 500 new buses for the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) from India for US$ 15 million under the Indian Line of Credit.
Earlier the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the purchase of 400 new 50-54 seater buses and 100 new 32-35 seater buses utilizing US$ 15.03 million under the Indian Line of Credit.
However, after Sri Lanka Transport Board has re-assessed their requirements in supplying an efficient and comfortable service to the general public and identified the types of buses and number of buses to be deployed in long distance, main routes in the urban and also the by-roads in rural areas.
Accordingly, the Minister of Transport Services Management has proposed to purchase 500 new 30-35 seater buses and 100 new 42-45 high back seater buses, instead of the buses previously planned to be purchased under the Indian Line of Credit,
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, during President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s visit to India in November 2019, announced a new $400 million credit line to boost infrastructure and development in Sri Lanka.
