The Chairman of Charith Group of Companies, Dr. Clarence Kumarage, was bestowed with a rare honour when he was appointed ‘Knight Commander of Asia’ at the 57th World Congress of Integrated Medicines, organized by Medicina Alternativa and Open International University for Complementary Medicines, (OIUCM) at the BMICH Colombo, recently. The event saw the participation of 53 OIUCM member countries
He is the only person ever from the SAARC region and among the 50 from Asia to receive this prestigious award. Globally he is also the 151st person to receive this accolade.
The ‘Knight Commander of Asia’ accolade was presented to Dr. Kumarage to honour him and for his entrepreneurial skills and also to recognize his social and cultural work which he said that ‘Knight Commander of Asia’ is an honour not only to him, but to the entire Sri Lanka as well.
Dr. Kumarage said that he is honored to receive ‘Knight Commander of Asia’ award and will undertake series of CSR initiatives to justify his selection. “I am planning to raise around Rs. 200 million and build and maintain an orphanage for children, with the blessings of the government,” he said.
“I plan to operate this proposed Children’s Orphanage in a 50 acre land in Western Province with natural surroundings and will also have a school from Grade 1 to 10 with Library, playground and other recreational facilities. I also hope to get foreign teachers to teach languages and skill development so that children will be job oriented when they pass out after O/L,” he also said.
At the 56th World Congress also held in Colombo, Dr. Kumarage was selected and honored with Knighthood at the event.
This OIUCM was formed in 1962 congruent to the policy objectives of the World Health Organization (WHO). In 1962, WHO and UNICEF sponsored an International Conference in Alma Ata, USSR, at the University of Kazakhstan.
In addition, Dr. Kumarage is a ‘Cabinet Member’ of the Lions District 306 C2 (Sri Lanka), and was the Chairperson of recently concluded Miss Sri Lanka pageant.
Dr. Kumarage (B.Sc (Hons) UK) was also honored with the Deshamanya, Deshabandu and Keerti Sri Abhimani Vyapara Vibooshana Awards earlier. An old boy of St. John’s Nugegoda, he also produced the ‘Nidahase Piyā’ Sinhala movie.
