SSC gate named in honour of Anura Tennekoon

The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) recognised former National Cricket Captain Deshabandu Anura Tennekoon by naming one of its club gates in his honour at a special ceremony conducted in Maitland Place yesterday.

Tennekoon is a former Captain and Head Coach of the SSC and has also served as Chairman of their Cricket Sector.

Tennekoon is widely regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s finest batting products from the pre-test era.

He Captained the National side during the Cricket World Cup of 1975 and 1979 and has continued to remain heavily involved in cricket even after his retirement.

Tennekoon acted as the CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) from 2000 to 2003 and later on he served as the Manager of the National Cricket Team.

“I would like to thank the authorities at SSC for naming a gate after me. I consider it a privilege to be associated with past cricketing stalwarts of the club after whom gates have been named,” said Tennekoon.

While recognising Tennekoon’s contributions to the Club, President of SSC, W. T. Ellawala stated: “SSC takes a lot of pride in recognising one of its most distinguished cricketers in contemporary times.”
