The incumbent President should contest for the next presidential election from the SLFP, says Duminda Dissanayake, UPFA MP.
Speaking at an event held at Nochchiyagama yesterday, MP Duminda said President Maithripala Sirisena should be the SLFP’s only candidate to contest for the next presidential election.
The SLFP should select a candidate for the Presidential election only if incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena is not keen to contest for a second term, he said.
“I have no intention of joining the United National Party. We were on the UNP stage to make the country victorious in 2015,” he said and added that President Maithripala Sirisena should be made President again to continue the programmes initiated by him as these programmes that benefit people in all parts of the country should continue.
He also said that other political parties may field their own candidates for the election. The SLFP and the SLPP held talks for a broader alliance and the first stage of the talks was successful and the second stage talks will begin soon. His party abstained from voting at the vote on the second reading of the budget. No decision has been taken with regard to the SLFP’s position at the vote on the third reading of the budget, he added.
