Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews helped Sri Lanka earn a hard-fought draw
Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews helped Sri Lanka earn a hard-fought draw (December 19). Only 13 overs were possible on the final day due to rains where the match was called off with Sri Lanka 3 down for 287. 246-run stand and still running unbeaten between Kusal Mendis and Anjelo Mathews saw Sri Lanka through to a Draw.
It was nice to note that its only the 22nd instance in the history of Test cricket that a side had played out a whole day without losing a wicket. Something that the selectors, the Coach and the Cricketing fraternity in Sri Lanka can be proud of after a longtime.
Mathews contribution is over 200 Runs during the entire match and is a clear indication of the experience and endurance the former skipper has in him, Mathews delivers when its needed and have now answered his critics.
If Sri Lanka Cricket moves in this direction, yes, Sri Lanka is slowly but surely getting closer to achieving greater heights. Its only a few of this type of magic that is needed for Sri Lanka Cricket to be a formidable force again.
Scores: Sri Lanka 282 (Angelo Mathews 83; Tim Southee 6-68) & 287/3 (Kusal Mendis 140*, Mathews 120*) drew with New Zealand 578 (Tom Latham 264*).
